GIS Analyst, Me He Wai (Te Mana o Te Wai) – Te Rūnanga o Te Rarawa, Kaitaia

Me He Wai
Me He Wai has two objectives:
1. Support tangata whenua to build their capacity and capability in and make decisions for freshwater management.
2. Improve the health of freshwater bodies of importance to tangata whenua and create nature-based employment opportunities.

The project will be implemented between 2022 and 2025, focused within the rohe of Te Rarawa and will be brought to life across 23 marae and hapū. Central to the project’s design are the aspirations of each marae – these will inform an individualised approach to the mahi.
Each marae will be supported to contribute to a data collection framework that they can use to monitor taiao health in their own rohe.

GIS Analyst
The GIS role will work within the Rūnanga based team to deliver the program. Your focus will be on building and administrating the Monitoring, Data Collection and Digital Health Dashboard stream of work. Work will include mapping and collecting data on the various environmental projects happening across the rohe, bringing together historic, current and future data in a centralised place. This will require establishing the Rūnanga and Marae positions on Data Sovereignty.

You will have an interest in environmental kaupapa and an understanding of the gap between Te Ao Māori and western science and legislation we are trying to bridge. You will enjoy collaborating in a team environment, but as the sole GIS role within the Rūnanga, will have autonomy and confidence to make decisions specific to your skills. Expert support will be provided for the role by our external partners as needed.

Applicants will preferably have:
• a post graduate qualification (GIS or associated discipline e.g. data science, computer science), or relevant experience. You will also have well-developed GIS skills, experience with the ArcGIS suite of software, and knowledge of national and international metadata standards.
• You will demonstrate awareness of tikanga Māori, strong oral and written communication skills, and the ability to build constructive relationships with colleagues and project partners.
