The Ruānuku (Sages) programme recognises the knowledge, skills and experience of kaumātua & kuia.

  • Supporting kaumātua & kuia
  • Engaging young whānau
  • Learning transformational knowledge
  • Applying inspired activity

Through this unique programme, Ruānuku staff connect whānau with kaumātua & kuia, and engage in practical activities designed to strengthen whānau, through time-honoured solutions.

Kaumātua and kuia work with whānau to share their expertise in subjects like rongoā Māori (herbal medicine); maara kai (gardening); food preservation; food preparation; and all things Māori.

Ruānuku staff work with the whānau and the kaumātua and kuia mentors, to create an environment of energised reciprocal learning.

“I feel confident to be able to navigate my family’s future by applying what I have learnt from these awesome mentors." (B. Natanahira)
