Pou Taiao Environmental Director

Purpose: 

To provide high-level strategic oversight of Te Runanga o Te Rarawa – Te Pou Taiao projects. This role ensures that all components of delivery, coordination, planning, reporting, compliance, and workforce capability are aligned. The director carries ultimate responsibility for ensuring all taiao outcomes are achieved in accordance with iwi, environmental, and funder expectations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all environmental programs under the Te Pou Taiao banner.

  • Lead integration of operations, coordination, and project outcomes.

  • Support strategic alignment across kaimahi roles, projects, funding, and reporting.

  • Provide leadership in program development, funding partnerships, and iwi alignment.

  • Represent the taiao program in external partnerships and governance spaces.

  • Ensure systems, processes, health and safety, and communications flow between teams.

  • Support capability building and succession planning across the taiao workforce.

  • Ensure all projects reflect Te Ao Māori, Te Tiriti principles, and hapū / iwi aspirations.

Key Skills and Attributes:

  • Proven strategic leadership experience in environmental kaupapa.

  • Deep understanding of Te Ao Māori and Te Rarawa priorities.

  • Strong governance, planning, and people leadership.

  • Experience managing inter agency relationships and funding contracts.

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.

Desirable Attributes:

  • Fluency in te reo Māori.
  • Postgraduate qualifications in environmental management, strategy, or Māori development.
  • Experience overseeing multi-disciplinary, iwi-led
