Te Runanga o Te Rarawa - Kaitaia

Ecologist

Purpose: 

Provide expert ecological guidance and leadership across all Te Rūnanga o Te Rarawa projects. Drive restoration vision, biodiversity recovery, and ensure taiao outcomes are achieved in alignment with iwi aspirations, mātauranga Māori, environmental science and cultural values.

Key responsibilities:

  • Guide biodiversity plans across Wairere, Tūwhenua, and Kauri Ora, Te Rūnanga o Te Rarawa

  • Assess site ecology, develop restoration targets, monitor biodiversity health

  • Interpret long term ecological data trends to guide restoration

  • Write stories of impact for funders and reporting (aligned with kaupapa storytelling)

  • Design and support educational content with the wider team

  • Assist with plant propagation projects and habitat restoration planning

Skills and Attributes:

  • Proven ecological field and reporting experience.

  • Skilled in storytelling, biodiversity data interpretation, and planning.

  • Team oriented, values-based leader with vision.

  • Uphold Te Rūnanga o Te Rarawa values: Manaakitanga, Rangatiratanga, Whakapapa, Kaitiakitanga, Mātauranga

  • Respect tikanga protocols (e.g. wai tapu, whanaungatanga, site conduct)

  • Field ecology and biodiversity restoration experience (forest, freshwater, or wetland)
